Towball systems

There are three main types of towball system available in the U.K

Fixed flange ball, fixed swan neck and swan neck detachable.

Fixed flange ball

A flange towbar has either a two hole or four hole face plate designed to 94/20/EC which can then have a standard 50mm towball bolted to it conforming to type A50-1.

The flange towbar is unique in the fact that it is designed and tested to allow for a 25mm spacer between the towbar flange and the towball. This unique feature facilitates the use of various accessories which are directly bolted to the towbar between the flange and the towball.

The advantages of a flange towbar include:

  • Cycle carriers - a direct bolted coupling provides the most secure fixing arrangement.
  • Bumper protector plates - Prevents the coupling head from damaging the bumper which can be expensive.
  • Caravan stabiliser attachment plates
  • Specialist towballs such as an AL-KO ball.
  • Replacement of a worn out or damaged towball is cost effective and straightforward and there is no need to replace the towbar.

Fixed swan neck

This is probably the least flexible of towbar designs with no flexibility to add extra attachments. It can be difficult to replace when worn and does not allow you to add accessories. Cycle carriers are available for this type of towbar but you cannot tow whilst carrying cycles.

The advantages of a fixed swan neck include:

  • Removable with use of tools (bolted types only)
  • Compatible with the Alko stabiliser system
  • Electrics mounted under the bumper giving a beter appearance

Detachable towbar systems

Detachable towbars are becoming an increasingly popular choice in the U.K.
The detachable ball systems are safe, reliable and easy to use. The number plate always remains visible. This innovative technology has been proven in practice for many years. They are as strong as fixed towbars and can tow the same capacity. More and more motorists are choosing Detachable Towbar Systems because they are easy to use.

The advantages of a removable swan neck include:

  • When not in use can be removed to preserve the "shins".
  • The towbar can be completely hidden when the neck is removed. (Vehicle dependant)
  • Unrestricted access to the boot.
  • No interferance to rear parking systems.
  • Our range of detachable towball systems can be replaced should the towball become worn or damaged without replacing the entire towbar.
